Description
Rhode Island's Deer Tick have returned to their roots with *Coin-O-Matic*, their ninth studio album and a significant departure from the polished production of recent releases. After two decades in the alternative rock-folk circuit and a brief flirtation with producer Dave Fridmann's experimental touches on *Emotional Contracts*, the Providence quartet elected to self-produce for the first time-a bold move given their stature. The title pays homage to a cigarette-vending-machine company once owned by mobster Raymond Patriarca, anchoring the record in the working-class mythology of Rhode Island, where the everyday dramas of Catholic families collided with the menace of organized crime. This duality drives the narrative arc of the record.
The band's Irish-Catholic upbringing permeates every track, with lead single "Mary Singletary" telling an irreverent tale of interfaith teenage lust-a tender yet cartoonish portrait of Catholic guilt and pre-marital sin. The album explores themes of desperation, grief, redemption, and resilience through the lens of the state's most colorful characters. Guests include Los Lobos' Steve Berlin on baritone saxophone and former Deer Tick member Rob Crowell on organ, adding texture to a sound that's unmistakably Deer Tick yet unfettered by any outside vision. It's their first entirely self-produced album in a two-decade-plus lifespan, recorded in their own space with no time limitations, allowing them to experiment with different ways to decorate their rock songs.
Sonically, there's nothing particularly country about it, though McCauley argues it feels like a country record set in an urban environment-complete with outlaws and regret. The album positions Deer Tick as serious contenders in the Americana canon, though they're never afraid to lean into the seediness of their home turf. It's an album that refuses to shy away from the uncomfortable truths of its place of origin while still possessing the universal pull of stories about loss and poor decisions. For a band that's long celebrated their longevity, *Coin-O-Matic* feels like a mid-career reckoning that's both deeply personal and surprisingly expansive.
The tracklist-titled *Coin-O-Matic*-includes "Dog Years," "Endless Loop," "507 Smith," and "Candy Cigarettes," among others that walk a fine line between narrative songwriting and atmospheric rock. Released in June 2026 via ATO Records, it's a self-assured statement from a band that's never been more comfortable making records-or at least, making them their way.
