Description
The name alone conjures pretensions of intellectual obfuscation, though this Richmond, Virginia duo weaponizes the moniker far less than they weaponize dynamic sonic architecture. Their debut, *Illiterate Light*, arrived in October 2019 under Atlantic Records-not as an indie curiosity, but as a full-bodied rock statement that immediately demanded attention. Rooted in the soil of Americana yet refusing confinement to a single genre, the album threads together indie rock, neo-psychedelia, and folk into a kaleidoscopic tapestry that defies the conventional power-trio formula.
Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran accomplish the impossible with mere two people: Gorman's signature feat involves singing while simultaneously headbanging, playing guitar, and manipulating a Moog synthesizer with his feet, while Cochran performs a standing drum kit setup and, dare one say, crowdsurfs. This physical commitment to their art is matched by their sonic commitment-*Illiterate Light* was recorded at Montrose Recording and Sputnik Sound in Nashville with producer Vance Powell, whose touch lent the record both organic warmth and the weight of a proper rock production.
The lead single, "Better Than I Used To," lingered on AAA radio charts for months, catching NPR's ear as one of 2019's best songs. The Washington Post described their sound as "Massive," a testament to a live show that tours by bicycle and powers stages at the Newport Folk Festival with the kinetic energy of a well-oiled machine.
