Description
Tune-Yards' fourth full-length, *I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life*, arrived on 4AD in January 2018 and marked a deliberate sonic shift for Merrill Garbus's long-running project. If *Visualise* and *Kiss the Future* were the frenzied, drum-machine-heavy experiments of a punk-pop girl group from Oakland, *Private Life* is the moment she stopped playing coy and started owning her craft. The album leans heavier into electronic textures and dance rhythms, weaving in Haitian and Kenyan musical sensibilities alongside her life as a DJ. It's an intersectional statement piece-Garbus explicitly addresses feminism, race, and the politics of whiteness, channeling influences as disparate as Johnny Clegg and Kendrick Lamar's workshop on identity. The result is a record that refuses to be pigeonholed into any single lane of the alternative dance scene.
Produced in tandem with Nate Brenner, with recording sessions at Tiny Telephone Studios in Oakland and mastering by the ever-reliable Dave Kutch in Harlem, the album balances precision and chaos. "Heart Attack," the album's lead single, opens with the urgent, propulsive energy that has always been Garbus's calling card. "Look at Your Hands" and "ABC 123" showcase her ability to craft hooks from the most unapologetically confrontational lyrics-about feeling the intrusion of systemic inequality into intimate spaces. Critics praised its ambition: a 78/100 Metacritic score and solid reviews from The Guardian and NME.
Yet *Private Life* is also deeply personal, its cover photo by Ginger Fierstein and art direction by Eric Mortensen reflecting Garbus's evolving public persona. The album's vinyl release performed well on Billboard's Vinyl Albums chart at #10, suggesting that her fans still prefer the tactile medium where the grooves of a tune-yards LP can be felt under a needle. If anything, *I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life* is the record where Merrill stopped being a "vocalist" and started being a producer, engineer, and artist in her own right.
