## Boys by Caamp (2018)
Issued in 2018 as a modest six-song EP split across two vinyl sides, *Boys* arrives from Taylor Meier and Evan Westfall's Ohio folk duo with the kind of understated confidence that only comes from honing your craft in dimly lit coffee houses around Athens. Much like early-period Avett Brothers, the pair fuses bluegrass instrumentation, pop sensibilities, and rock energy into something distinctly their own, punctuated by Meier's raspy, emotionally vulnerable lead vocals that sound like they've been through a lifetime of love affairs and a few too many cigarettes.
Recorded with the lean efficiency characteristic of the band's early work, the EP was produced in-house by Caamp themselves, with Matt Vinson handling both mixing and mastering duties-a pragmatic approach that lends the recordings their characteristic immediacy and warmth. Evan Westfall's banjo work and harmony vocals layer atop Meier's acoustic guitar and piano, creating a soundscape that's intimate yet expansive, perfectly suited for headlining venues like Red Rocks by the time *By & By* dropped the following year. The artwork, designed by Stephanie Elise Haller, captures the album's introspective mood without overplaying its hand.
The EP's modest size may have been a strategic gamble, or perhaps just a reflection of the duo's minimalist ethos at the time. Regardless, *Boys* established Caamp's position as one of the most authentic voices in the Americana revival, a space they've inhabited with integrity ever since. The Stomp and Holler influences that color the record's rhythmic approach-sometimes driving, sometimes languid-show that the duo's songwriting is more than just well-crafted folk filler; it's the real deal, a genuine connection between artist and listener that you don't come by often in today's streaming-first landscape.
As with any collection, the value of *Boys* is in its ability to stand the test of time, its simple truths about heartbreak, longing, and the passage of time resonating with that rare combination of sincerity and artistry that makes folk music endure. For the collector seeking authenticity over marketing, this is a find that speaks volumes about the band's foundational sound.
