Description
El Bueno y el Malo, Hermanos Gutiérrez's most cinematic instrumental voyage yet, arrived October 28, 2022, from Easy Eye Sound's Nashville studios. The title nods to Sergio Leone's *The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly*, but also to the dualities within each person-the music's way of illuminating both light and shadow without a single lyric in sight. Produced by Black Keys' Dan Auerbach and mixed with him and M. Allen Parker, the album expands the brothers' signature two-guitar intimacy with subtle percussion, castanets, and strings that enhance rather than overwhelm their telepathic interplay.
Formed in Zürich by brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez (sons of a Swiss father and Ecuadorian mother), the duo honed their sound through a decade of independent releases, beginning with their 2017 debut *8 Años*. *Hijos del Sol* (2020) became their breakout during the pandemic, streamed worldwide and eventually catching Auerbach's ear. His presence at the sessions was transformative-"he feels the music," Estevan recalls-but he didn't impose, only enriched. On "Tres Hermanos," Auerbach himself plays guitar, the track even renamed in his honor.
The result is a sprawling, atmospheric record that feels like a road trip through South American deserts and coastal highways. Tracks like "Hermosa Drive" and "Thunderbird" evoke Morricone soundtracks with guitars that rumble and shimmer in the same breath. As the band's *AllMusic* review notes, it's "a deep, dark energy" born from the brothers' intimate relationship and shared history. *Hijis del Sol* is the band's most epic journey yet, retaining their essential sound while adding depth and texture.
A perfect companion for late-night listening or contemplation, it proves that instrumental music can convey complex emotional landscapes. As Alejandro Gutiérrez says: "We just have to go with the music, trust in ourselves, and see where it takes us." The album's journey-across continents and personalities-ends with the conviction that good music always finds its way home.
