Released in February 2008, Beach House's *Devotion* marks the moment the Baltimore dream-pop duo graduated from lo-fi basement recordings to a more polished, yet still intimately textured, sound. Recorded over August and September 2007 at Lord Baltimore Studios in Maryland and mixed by the ubiquitous Rob Girardi, the album represents a significant refinement of the hazy, ethereal aesthetic established on their self-titled debut. While it retains the duo's characteristic melancholy and romantic melancholia, *Devotion* features richer instrumentation, including harpsichord and more expressive slide guitar work from Alex Scally, creating a more vivid and fleshed-out sonic landscape.
Victoria Legrand's vocal performance reaches new heights of mastery on this record, comfortably front and center rather than occasionally getting lost in the mix, allowing her keening, Nico-inspired tones to take on a truly devotional cast. The tracklist spans twelve songs of quiet intensity, from the dark chamber pop ambience of "You Came to Me" to the soulful organs and swelling arrangements of "Heart of Chambers," a song written at a practice space after they received noise complaints from neighbors. The cover of Daniel Johnston's "Some Things Last a Long Time," originally from his 1990 album, adds a country-tinged torch song quality to the collection.
Critically, the album received overwhelmingly positive reception, scoring a 73 on Metacritic and landing on numerous year-end "best of" lists from Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, who included it in their "40 Greatest Stoner Albums" list for its drifty, velveteen atmosphere. Internationally released by Bella Union and Mistletone, it debuted at #195 on the Billboard 200 and would eventually sell 49,000 copies in the US by 2012. The title itself, drawn from a lyric on "All the Years," reflects the duo's shared pursuit of artistic and emotional intensity, perfectly capturing the essence of two dreamers chasing something together.
