Description
**Sound of Silver** (2007) - LCD Soundsystem's third and most enduring album, though it would ultimately remain their magnum opus before Murphy's brief 2010 departure and 2016 reunion. Recorded at Long View Farm in Massachusetts, where Murphy draped the studio in silver fabric and tin foil to escape the "woody" sound of their debut and embrace what he called "shiny music" - think T. Rex, Hawkwind, and early synth-pop. It's not so much an album as a meditation on loss, aging, and the passage of time, with tracks like the elegiac opener "Someone Great" (dedicated to Dr. George Kamen, Murphy's psychiatrist), "New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down," and the Joy Division-inspired "All My Friends" that would become a generation's anthem.
Critics went wild. Rolling Stone awarded it four stars, Pitchfork gave it a 9.2 and named "Time" the second-best song of the decade, and Metacritic listed it as the tenth-best-reviewed album of 2007. It earned a Grammy nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album and later appeared on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. Murphy, who dedicated the record to Kamen after his 2006 death, reportedly felt suicidal during sessions - and that emotional pressure yielded a record of raw vulnerability masked by dance-floor swagger.
Despite DFA collaborators Pat Mahoney, Tyler Pope, and Nancy Whang sketched parts on tape, Murphy essentially performed as a one-man band, re-recording every track solo. He even produced a 45-minute Nike "Original Run" album that served as a creative breakthrough when the emotional toll hit hardest. A jiu-jitsu fighter who claimed he'd never run a single mile, Murphy's discomfort with fame only made the music more authentic - and the result remains a singular document in electronic music: equal parts party record, farewell letter, and cultural snapshot.
